Telefónica launches LUCA, its unit specialized in Big Data services

Telefónica's new unit will have a comprehensive portfolio of services to cover the Big Data needs of companies and all types of organizations, from the management and analytics of data to the use of tools and infrastructures.

Telefónica takes a new step in its strategy of being a data-driven company with the creation of a division, called LUCA, dedicated to commercializing Big Data services, helping to understand and extract the greatest possible value from the transparent and responsible use of data.

Its creation is part of Telefónica's strategy, defined after a process that began several years ago with the exploration of the Big Data potential internally, the adaptation of its infrastructures in order to capture it and the increase of its analytical capacities.

According to Chema Alonso, chief data officer of Telefónica, the creation of this subsidiary is part of the company's strategies to become a "data driven" company.

In this sense, Alonso reveals that the operator performed this type of work internally for a long time, and that it has now decided to make the leap for marketing to third parties.

The operator took advantage of the celebration of its Industry Analyst Day, in which it gathered analysts from the big technology consultancies, to present the project. In fact, the meeting, presented by José María Álvarez-Pallete, was attended by representatives of firms such as CCS Insight, Frost & Sullivan, Strategy Analytics, Gartner, Beecham Research, IDC, Analysys Mason, Forrester, Ovum or 451 Research.

The new division will include various Telefónica assets in this area, among which Synergic Partners, acquired in 2015, stands out; as well as the Big Data joint venture established with China Unicom, the activities of Telefónica Dynamics Inside or the areas in this area of some startups owned by Telefónica Open Future. Similarly, the operator will use the data center infrastructures of its subsidiary Acens.

LUCA, directed by Elena Gil, who will report to Chema Alonso, already has a team of more than 300 employees, a hundred of them contributed by Synergic Partners; and its catalog of products and services will also be marketed through Telefónica's subsidiaries in each of the countries in which they operate, similar to the model of Eleven Paths, the operator's cybersecurity division.

More specifically, LUCA's first line of services relies mainly on the value for all types of customers of the anonymized and aggregated data of Telefónica's networks. This category includes already existing services such as Smart Steps and mobility management solutions for more efficient planning, for example, of transport and tourist services in cities or, in the case of a health emergency, in helping to better understand the movements of the population and limit the spread of pandemics.

The services of analytics and external consultancy to national and international clients already offered by Synergic Partners make up the second line of services, while, through BDaaS (Big Data as a Service), LUCA will help its clients to manage and extract the maximum value of your own data using Telefónica's cloud infrastructures.
